Wits University launches climate change multilingual project

The Wits Centre for Journalism (WCJ) has introduced a project, In My Culture, which seeks to “break language barriers” in climate action.

With climate change literature predominantly in English, millions of people miss crucial environmental insights around the world. The project is run in collaboration with climateXchange (cXc) and aims to create an evolving online platform to collect words and stories related to local understandings of climate change.

By empowering communities to share their climate experiences in their own words, In My Culture aims to “bridge the knowledge gap and make crucial climate change information accessible to as many cultures and communities as possible,” said an announcement in the WCJ’s newsletter.

While the initiative is still in its infancy, WCJ together with cXc hopes to expand its reach via international gatherings in the media space and report on climate experiences in as many local languages as possible.

The first recordings took place at the 20th African Investigative Journalism Conference at Wits University in November last year.
