ICA 2025 Preconference: “Artificial Intelligence in Journalism from a Global Perspective: Past, Present, and Future”

ICA 2025 Preconference: “Artificial Intelligence in Journalism from a Global Perspective: Past, Present, and Future” Over the past two decades, there has been a notable shift towards automation and data-driven news production processes in many countries worldwide, partially supported by artificial intelligence (AI). Given the rapid and far-reaching changes AI drives in journalism, there is an urgent need to understand its past, present, and future implications.

This preconference at the 2025 International Communication Association (ICA) annual conference aims to bring together scholars 1) to provide an opportunity for discussing the past, present, and future of AI in journalism and 2) to address the specific uses of (generative) AI in countries from the Global South and Asia, which have sometimes been late adopters of such technologies.
