- The representation of sub-Saharan African migrants in the Tunisian written media: a corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis
Author: Asma Heidi Nairi
A new study sheds light on how sub-Saharan African migrants are portrayed in Tunisian written media, revealing a troubling pattern of negative representation. Published in The Journal of North African Studies, Asma Hedi Nairi’s research uses Corpus-Assisted Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine media narratives surrounding migrants during the 2022–2023 anti-migrant wave under President Kais Saied’s leadership.
The findings highlight that while some humanitarian discourse exists, the majority of media coverage either subtly reinforces anti-migrant sentiment or explicitly portrays migrants as invaders, security threats, economic burdens, or moral hazards. The study suggests that Tunisian media largely mirrors the government’s anti-immigrant rhetoric, raising concerns about its role in shaping public perceptions and potentially fueling xenophobia.
This alignment between media discourse and political narratives has serious implications—not only for the safety and rights of sub-Saharan migrants but also for Tunisia’s broader human rights and democratization process. As Tunisia grapples with shifting political tides, this study underscores the need for a more balanced and responsible media approach to migrant representation.

- Enhancing the role of mass media in the translation of evidence from health policy and systems research in Nigeria
Authors: Prince Agwu, Chinyere Mbachu and Obinna Onwujekwe
There is a critical gap in communication between health researchers and policy-makers in Nigeria, limiting the use of research evidence in shaping health policies. A recent study highlights the vital role mass media can play in closing this gap by making research findings more accessible and actionable.
Despite producing high-quality research, many health studies remain locked in academic journals, far removed from public discourse and policy debates. Researchers and media professionals participating in a communications workshop found that traditional academic dissemination is often restrictive, limiting its real-world impact.
Drawing from cultivation theory, the study underscores how the media can amplify research findings, engage communities, and prompt policy responses. By strategically utilizing mass media, researchers can bridge the divide between academia and policy-making, ensuring that evidence informs health decisions.
For research to drive policy change, it must go beyond academic circles. Media channels offer a powerful tool for translating evidence into action—strengthening Nigeria’s health system and influencing meaningful reforms.
